The first typewriter I ever used looked like that -- but it was the typewriter in my father's office. I think we still have something one or two models on in the basement somewhere.

Oh, god, I had one of those. I found it on top of a garbage can one night in New York, cleaned it up, found a place that still sold the right ribbons and wrote my first story on it with a bottle of Jim Beam pretending to be Lillian Hellman (yes, I was VERY young. Yes, I still have the story. No, I was not Lillian Hellman, nor ever shall be :) It broke my heart to leave it behind when I moved away, but at that weight I'd have had to buy it its own seat on the plane to London.
